Wormwood Essential Oil Indications/Uses

Although Wormwood Oil is toxic and must be used with much care, when used as directed by a qualified health care professional, it has many healing and health –supporting properties.

Wormwood Essential Oil is a cholagogue, meaning it encourages the liver to discharge bile into the stomach. Bile assists in the breakdown of food and also neutralizes excess stomach acids.  It is helpful for ailments such as ulcers, acidosis and acidity. Since the cholagogue properties assist in the discharge of other digestive juices as well, Wormwood Essential Oil is beneficial as a digestive aid.

An emenagogue, Wormwood Essential Oil stimulates menstrual discharge and removes menstrual obstruction. This helps prevent conditions such as uterine tumours and cancer, which are associated with menstrual obstruction.  These emenagogue properties also address cramps and other discomforts associated with menstruation.

Wormwood Essential Oil’s febrifuge properties make it useful for bringing down fever. The oil is also beneficial for destroying harmful bacteria and micro organisms.

Since this oil is toxic to humans and animals, it is also toxic to insects, making it an effective insecticide, especially to those insects that have developed a resistance to other toxins. The toxins present also make this oil a natural vermifuge, making it a potent tool in ridding the body of tapeworms, hook worms and round worms.

Because of its narcotic qualities, Wormwood Essential Oil eases conditions including convulsions, epilepsy, insomnia and agitation.

This oil is an overall tonic, supporting general health, and helping to strengthen the immune system. Wormwood Oil can also be used as a deodorant, thanks to its scent that is reminiscent of thuja (cedar).

Wormwood Essential Oil is an anti-helmitic, cholagogue, deodorant, digestive, emenagogue, febrifuge, insecticide, narcotic, vermifuge, and tonic substance.

Wormwood Essential Oil Contra Indications

Wormwood Essential Oil contains large quantities of a toxic substance known as thujone. Thujone is a neurotoxin, meaning it is a poison that acts on the nervous system. It also has narcotic effects and is extremely addictive.  Extreme care is called for when using Wormwood medicinally. It should be taken only under the supervision of a qualified medical professional, and only for short term use.

Pregnant and lactating women should avoid Wormwood Essential Oil.

Essential Oils are natural, contracted oils that have the fragrance of the plant from which they originated. Most typically, the oils are extracted from the plant through distillation. In many cases, the distillation process involves the use of steam.  As steam passes through the plant’s stems, seeds, flowers or leaves, it assists in vaporizing the volatile compounds.

While essential oils have various uses, they have a long documented history of medicinal value. Essential Oils can support overall health, act as a treatment or remedy for various medical or psychological conditions or help prevent infections and illness.

Essential Oils should not be used on animals as they can have adverse effects.

Keep out of the reach of children and animals.
