Chamomile Oil Origin and Extraction

Chamomile Oil is derived from the flowers of two types of the chamomile plant – the Roman Chamomile and the German Chamomile. The two have similar properties, but there are some distinct differences in their healing abilities.  Chamomile is a member of the ragweed family.

Chamomile Oil Essential Oil Indications/Uses

Roman chamomile is more calming, and acts as an emenagogue in that it encourages blood flow in the pelvis and uterine area. German chamomile has significant anti-inflammatory properties. Both chamomiles induce perspiration, thereby helping to flush toxins from the body, preventing infection and lowering fever.  Both chamomiles prevent infections due to bacteria and fungi and also kill intestinal worms. Both chamomiles help in lifting depression and in generating a pleasant emotional state.  Both help to lower blood pressure. The Roman variety is effective in calming feelings of anger in children, and the German is effective at reducing inflammation of the urinary and digestive systems in adults. Both chamomiles support health in the liver, stomach and circulatory system. Both are effective at reducing pain in joints, muscles, teeth and elsewhere. German chamomile promotes heart health.

Chamomile Oil Contra Indications

Chamomile should be avoided by anyone who is allergic to chamomile or to any member of the ragweed family. Chamomile may worsen asthma symptoms, so is not recommended for people with asthma.  Also, chamomile may cause drowsiness, so do not drive for two hours after ingesting this oil.

Essential Oils are natural, contracted oils that have the fragrance of the plant from which they originated. Most typically, the oils are extracted from the plant through distillation. In many cases, the distillation process involves the use of steam.  As steam passes through the plant’s stems, seeds, flowers or leaves, it assists in vaporizing the volatile compounds.

While essential oils have various uses, they have a long documented history of medicinal value. Essential Oils can support overall health, act as a treatment or remedy for various medical or psychological conditions or help prevent infections and illness.

Essential Oils should not be used on animals as they can have adverse effects.
